IIMs take battle against reservations to the streets [Aug. 25th, 2006|03:26 pm]

[Current Location |Delhi]

Yesterday evening, a group of IIM Alumni gathered near the Jantar Mantar, at the designated spot in the national capital for peaceful protests and held banners registering their protest against the Government's rollout of 27.5% reservation for OBCs in the IIMs and various other Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL).

While we didn't get the same treatment that the striking doctors got - tear-gas and water cannons, there was a significant police presence around, since the medicos' march had gone awry, with a few hundred of them being arrested. The road ahead for the anti-reservation movement is long, arduous and uphill, but what is frightening is where the reservations will probably come in next - jobs in the private sector.

Alumni meet dates, Genpact course at IIMK [Nov. 22nd, 2005|06:12 pm]

romad
Genpact (formerly GECIS) will be offering a course at IIMK on BPOs (operations, six sigma, etc), commencing from January 2006.
This was driven by Sanjeev Singh (IIMK Class of 2001), who is currently Vice-President, Collections CoE, Genpact.

The IIMK Alumni Meet on campus is scheduled for January 28-29th, 2006. Please do try your best to make it, and get as many of your batchmates to come. From our batch - Class of 2005 - around 30-40 people are expected! A lot of our classmates have already booked apex fare tickets from Delhi and Bombay. :)

During a recent visit to campus, was rather saddened to hear that a number of faculty have left - Profs Uday & Suma Damodaran, E. Noronha, P. D'Cruz, Tapan Panda and R. Nargaonkar. I think it's a sad commentary on the management of the current Director.

As stressed by Karan, we seriously need to know the dates in advance. I require to give at least a month's notice to my comp. if I have to take an extended leave. Resolve the issues ASAP.
Pesonally it wud be gr8 if Alumni and Backwaters happen at the same time.

To anybody on campus:

When is Backwaters?
When is the Alumni Meet?

A lot of the Delhi and Mumbai "people" have to book their tickets. So tell quick-quick!

And then there were none.....SUMMERS 2006 [Oct. 29th, 2005|11:52 am]

Dear All, we have had an amazing Summer Placement season for the Class of 2006 this year. All kudos to the Placecom for their efforts and planning.

THE REPORT:

Summers 2006: Corporate biggies lap-up talent at IIM K in record time

IIM Kozhikode set new benchmarks across the premier B-school recruitment scenario in India by placing an increased batch of 160 students (up from 133 last year) within the first 4 days of the summer placements.

With over fifty top Indian companies and MNCs participating, a plethora of exciting "live" projects were on offer across varied domains. Companies from all sectors and functional areas like Investment Banking, Consulting, FMCG, Retail Banking, Insurance, Derivative Trading, Pharma, Manufacturing, Automobile, Advertising, IT, ITeS etc, were present, which enabled the students to choose their summer projects in the area of their preference.

The presence of 27 new companies on campus was an indicator of the rising stature of IIM Kozhikode in the corporate world. Some of the companies that debuted on campus this year include Cognizant, Edelweiss Capital, Johnson & Johnson, Ocwen Financial Solutions, Reliance Industries Ltd, L'Oréal, Dr Reddy's and Whirlpool.

The strength of the enduring relationships with past recruiters was manifest during the process with companies like Ernst & Young, Capgemini, ITC, Asian Paints, Marico Industries, GE Money, GECIS (GENPACT), ICICI Bank, The Murugappa Group, Aditya Birla Group (BMC) making a large number of offers.

Marketing projects remained a favorite amongst students, with 32% of the batch accepting offers from that sector. Projects in Investment Banking, Corporate Finance, Treasury Operations, Commodity and Derivatives Trading, Retail Banking, Consulting, Systems, Advertising, HR, Supply Chain Management were also accepted with great enthusiasm.

The success of the summer recruitment process can be succinctly expressed in the words of the placements chairperson, Dr SSS Kumar: "The pace at which the summer interns were recruited shows the faith Corporate India has in IIM Kozhikode graduates".

Cognizant and Max New York Life, recruiting for the first time from IIM Kozhikode, extended 6 offers each, the highest across companies this year.

The highest stipend offered was Rs. 30000/- per month while the average stipend was Rs. 15000/- per month. The companies, vying with each other to attract top talent, made an average of 3.4 offers each, ensuring that Summers 2006 set a scorching pace, with the entire process drawing to a close within 4 action-packed days.

The above results bore testimony to IIM Kozhikode’s status as a preferred destination for premier recruiters. Lending credence to the faith reposed by the recruiters with the institute, the students at IIM Kozhikode have historically performed extremely well in their summer internships with around 25% of the senior batch landing up with pre-placements offers or intents. Earlier this year, IIM K students also won the best project awards at companies like Wipro, GENPACT (erstwhile GECIS), and Patni.

The whole experience can be summed up in the words of some of the recruiters:

"We liked the students approach to the entire process. The discipline and manner of participation was really good.”

- Mr. Ashutosh Telang, Head, Corporate HR, Marico Industries

"I was struck by the passion and drive of all the students we met. The setting of IIMK is amazing, surely a great place to work and study!"

- Mr. Didier Villanueva, Managing Director, L'Oréal India

"Outstanding hospitality, high energy and excellent quality of students."

- Mr. Prabir Jha, Vice President HR, Dr Reddy's Laboratories.

Update from IDBI [May. 29th, 2005|01:20 pm]
iimk

dhans_diary
It has been six days since my tryst with actual employment has started. We have had an induction till now wherein the basics of banking were taught as well as interaction of top level people was done. it has been pretty hectic in BElapur. We have got decent acco. Seems like IDBI ppl have this fascination with coffee....every one hour coffee cups are distributed in the "class"room!! There is also this fascination with ACs. In the flats as well as the offices, ACs are blasted at full volume. It makes you think whether you are really in Mumbai where now the humidit is reaching unprecedented levels!! As I was sweating it out in a bus on Sunday while going for Nikhil's wedding, I realised this is one fascination I really like!!

Nikhil's wedding
Finally the sheik of IIMK got married!! ANd I was there to honour him with my presence. Joining me were the UTI gang (Chimpy, Tushar, Anuj Aggarwal and Chitto), BCOne guys (Deepak Kumar and Ballu) and Shreekanth. Shreekanth was spookily dressed in the same Kurta he wore during the alumni meet two years ago. It kinda felt as if things had come full circle. Also there was Ravi Girdhar all the way from Bangalore just for the wedding. As someone remarked, his love for marriages can be seen as the reason for his gr8 health!! Wht was distressing to see tht not many K ppl had turned up for the marriage. This aint good.

CHennai for me
I have got Chennai as my location for now. Being away from my hometown is no sweat, but the real problem is going away from home!! This surprise decision has depressed Pragati somewhat as she wants Bombay and looking at my location and the fact tht my mentor is the one who took my interview, there is a line of thought going on tht locations are being given Institutewise!! Oh, btw Pragati is doing good. She has totally immersed herself in work to try to get the highest grade. In fact her excess efforts have led to some really funny CP!! As for Jenny, she is her cool self over here.

Six degrees of separation
The six degrees thing is alive and kicking here!! I have met two college mates here. Also have got to know friends of Vivek and Adarsh !!

Hi There [May. 2nd, 2005|11:05 pm]

skarra
Hi Folks, Glad to find a few LJers from K. I'll be joining K this year. To give a quick update on some major phases of my life: I currently work for HCL Tech. in Chennai (been there for ~3 years), before that I was in the US getting a masters in CS from the Univ. of Utah. And before that I got a B.Tech (Chemical) from CECRI, Karaikudi.

I am a dabbler, and did not want to miss out the mba experience. So, here I am. :)

We had a mini PGP1/PGP2 get-together in Chennai (N H Road Barista) yesterday. About 6 of us new joinees and 6 PGP2-ers were there. I guess we will meet the rest of the folks in Chennai before the end of the month. The PGP2ers were planning something.

I'm afraid there aren't many more LJers in the '07 batch. I sent a mail to iimk_2007 yahoo groups list. There was no response.

Kickstart! [Jan. 21st, 2005|11:52 am]

Greetings all,

romad and me were discussing how to setup an IIMK alumni-student blog that is really active, and able to keep all community members informed about each other. The idea is that since we (PGP 2005) will soon be out of here, building the network and list of contacts should begin at the earliest.

One of the major problems will be handling multiple blogging service providers- some people are on Blogger, some on LJ, others on rediffblogs and so on. Any ideas on how we can bring them all together?

Meanwhile, this community is finally growing, so I'm hoping (once again) that it will finally show some signs of life!

Try and get everyone from K on your friends list to sign up here...

Greetings all,

Now that varunmadhok is on board, and romad and divyaiyer are quite active... this community may finally show some signs of life.

I figure anything K- related of common interest could be posted here...
